Giving Sight to the Blind in Thailand

Opening Eyes to the Truth of the Gospel - A story of hope, healing, and transformation in the villages of northern Thailand.

In the remote villages of northern Thailand, hundreds of people live in darkness—not just spiritually, but physically. Cataracts, a condition easily treatable in developed countries, rob countless individuals of their sight and their ability to work, care for their families, or simply see the faces of their loved ones.

This past spring, a team of 23 medical professionals and volunteers from Caring Partners International traveled to Chiang Mai, Thailand, partnering with local churches to bring hope and healing to those in need. Over the course of two weeks, our team performed over 200 cataract surgeries, restored vision to the blind, and shared the love of Christ with every patient.

A Mission of Mercy

The mission was made possible through the generous support of our donors and the dedication of volunteer ophthalmologists, nurses, and support staff who gave their time and expertise to serve "the least of these."

Medical team serving patients in Thailand

Each morning began with prayer as the team prepared to serve. Patients arrived from surrounding villages, many having walked for hours or traveled by motorcycle taxi to reach the clinic. For most, this was their first encounter with professional eye care.

"When we restore someone's physical sight, we have the opportunity to share about the One who can restore their spiritual sight. That's what Evangelism Through Medicine® is all about."

— Dr. Adam G. Reed, President of CPI

Lives Transformed

One of the most memorable patients was Somchai, a 67-year-old rice farmer who had been blind for nearly five years. Unable to work, he had become a burden to his family—or so he believed. After a successful surgery, the moment his bandages were removed and he could see again, tears streamed down his face.

"I can see my grandchildren," he whispered. "I can see the sky again."

More Than Medicine

While the medical care was transformative, the spiritual impact was equally profound. Working alongside local Thai pastors, our team shared the Gospel with every patient and their families. Many heard the message of Jesus Christ for the first time.

By the end of the mission, 47 individuals made decisions to follow Christ, and dozens more expressed interest in learning more about the faith. Local churches now have new members and new opportunities to disciple these believers.
